• The Preston Chronicle and Lancashire Advertiser Preston, Lancashire, England Friday, December 24, 1852 - Page 6 — Chess Championship. — To The Editor Of The Preston Chronicle. — SIR,—I was much surprised, and not a little amused, by the paragraph which appeared in your columns last Saturday, headed “Chess Championship,” containing the particulars of a “match” at chess, betwixt myself and Mr. F. Myers, the result of which I infer placed him at the head of our chess amateurs in this locality. The “match” was to consist of five games, to be played by consultation, of which only one was partially played, when I gave up the contest in his favour. The game itself is below criticism, being vilely played throughout, as any one competent to judge will say. As some extenuation for the loss of one game, and the “match,” I have won the last nine games played by us, a result which at least should raise in some minds doubt as to which is the better player; but to prove to Mr. Myers and his friends, and chess amateurs here, which is really the better player, I now propose to play him, at the Preston Chess Club, a match of seven, thirteen or twenty-one games, at his option: in seven, I will give the odds of four games; in thirteen, nine games; and in twenty-one, fourteen games, odds, which all conversant with chess will admit to be great, and which I should not dare to offer if I were not confident of success.
  In conclusion, I beg to say that I am sorry the “match” should have been brought before the public in the way that it has been, for it compels me to reply, or my silence would be taken as a tacit acknowledgment of Mr. Myers's superiority, which I by no means admit.
