• The La Crosse Tribune La Crosse, Wisconsin Friday, August 17, 1928 — Moon Establishes His Innocence In Trial For Assault — Milwaukee, Wis. — (AP) — The moon and its phases Friday freed Paul Saunders from conviction on a charge carrying a maximum sentence of 30 years in the state prison. Through the testimony of W.P. Stewart, federal meteorologist and Arpad E. Elo, Astronomer at Marquette University, Saunders proved to the satisfaction of Municipal Judge George Shaughnessy that the darkness of the night made identification of the assailant of Mrs. Jessie Forbes impossible.

• The Times-Tribune Scranton, Pennsylvania Monday, September 24, 1928 - Page 25 — Capablanca Leads In International Chess — Budapest, Hungary, Sept. 24.— Jose R. Capablanca, of Havana, remains in the lead in the international chess masters' tournament at the Siesta Sanatorium building after the conclusion of the third round Sunday, in which he was pitted against Frank J. Marshall, of New York, the United States champion. The Cuban expert had the choice of opening. Marshall was at his best and countered with a most careful defense. Neither player could make any headway and finally a repetition of moves brought about a draw. It was the third draw scored by the New Yorker thus far, Capablanca leads with a score of 2-1.
  Hans Kmoch, of Vienna, moved up into second place by defeating Havast, of Budapest, in a brilliant contested game. Kmoch had the black pieces. The other winners in yesterday's round was Dr. A. Vajda, of this city, who defeated his townsman, Menenyi, after winning a pawn in the middle game Dr. Vajda had the opening.
  Hermann Steiner, of New York, distinguished himself by holding the noted Austrian master, Rudolph Spielmann, of Vienna, to a draw. Steiner had the initiative and attacked vigorously. When the complications became too great he resorted to a perpetual check and the game was drawn. • The Brooklyn Daily Eagle Brooklyn, New York Thursday, September 27, 1928 - Page 29 — (Column) Marshall Presses Capablanca In Budapest Chess Tourney; Bogoljubow Seeking Title — Budapest, Hungary, Sept. 27 — After 19 games in five rounds, with six adjourned, Frank J. Marshall, United States champion, and Jose R. Capablanca of Havana share the honors of first place in the international chess masters tournament in progress at the Siesta Sanatorium Building. Both have completed their schedules of five matches and neither so far has been defeated. Each has scored two victories and drawn three times for titles of 3½—1½ Marshall has won from Havasi and Kmoch and drawn with Capablanca, H. Steiner and Dr. Vajda. Capablanca defeated Havasi and Merenyi and drew with Kmoch, Marshall and Spielmann. The only other players undefeated so far are the two Hungarians, Z. von Balla and A. Steiner. Hermann Steiner of New York drew three games in succession and then lost to his namesake in the fourth round. His fifth game stands adjourned… The Championship Situation. New and entirely unexpected developments in connection with the negotiations for the next world championship match have taken place, in consequence of which not a little doubt surrounds the possibility of a return match next spring between Dr. Alexander Alekhine of Paris and Jose R. Capablanca of Havana. Dr. Alekhine, it is reported, has accepted a challenge from E. D. Bogoljubow of Triberg, Germany, the winner of the recent tournament at Bad-Kissingen. Bogoljubow will be prepared to meet the champion in the fall of 1929. In view of the former Russian champion's achievements in tournaments of the highest class, there is no question as to the merits of his claim to be considered as a seeker for the highest honor the chess world has to bestow. On the other hand, it seems to leave Capablanca high and dry, unless it is the purpose of Dr. Alekhine to meet him first in the spring at Bradley Beach, N.J., as has been proposed. This would indeed be setting a precedent. It has been understood all alone that Capablanca had first call upon Dr. Alekhine for a return match. The latest report from Paris is to the effect that Dr. Alekhine did not receive Capablanca's challenge which, according to Dr. Norbert L. Lederer, the Cuban's representative in this city, was mailed to the champion fully two months ago… Read More
