• The Boston Globe Boston, Massachusetts Sunday, October 28, 1979 - Page 68 — Cheat? Not only possible, but done. — Athletics have the problem of bribery, bridge has the problem of hidden signals of cards held, and now tournament chess too has the problem of cheating.
  David Levy tells all in a recent article in the British magazine “Chess.” One problem is that of teams helping out each other. One such case occurred in 1970, when two Polish players with better positions let their flags drop against Greece, who then advanced to the finals.
  However, the worst cases appear to be outright sale of losses, in some cases to share prize money.
  Another is that losers permit the winner to achieve a GM or IM norm. Levy claims that Taimanov paid Matulovich for a win to qualify in the 1970 Interzonal. He claims that one foreign player with outstanding tourney success in the US regularly attempts to and does bribe other players, even in the presence of witnesses. Such bribes can be critical in the late rounds when the final points are decisive of the tourneys.
  Levy demands with good cause that FIDE look into these matters and parcel out stiff sentences, including life-time suspensions, to the offenders. And here we thought the only way to cheat in chess was to sneak a Knight back onto the board! Read More

• The Boston Globe Boston, Massachusetts Sunday, November 04, 1979 - Page 134 — More on (gasp!) cheating — In last week's column, we spoke about the problem of cheating when players sell losses in International competition. A similar problem has arisen in class championships here in the United States. When players are close to winning prizes, apparently bargaining has occurred to determine the result.
  In a current chess Horizons issue, Robert Corwin describes problems by Bill Goichberg, executive director of The Continental Chess Association in one recent tourney.
  In one incident, a position was repeated several times, the two players then conferred, came back to the Board and the game was quickly won. Nothing was done, for lack of proof.
  In another incident, however, the players stopped their clock while they conferred. Goichberg called the game a draw.
  In still another incident, Goichberg encountered a falsified score sheet where two players both claimed a win against each other.
  Then, there is a more subtle type of cheating, in which a player deliberately drops games to get into a lower rated class and cleans up on prize money. Goichberg proposes to disallow prizes to those who have had a sudden, drastic drop in ratings.
  Such are the woes of tournament chess and when the prize money becomes substantial. Read More
