East Providence, Rhode Island (AP) — Youngsters in a second and third grade class aren't wasting their free periods on childish mischief—they're too busy playing chess.
“When they come in, in the morning it's just straight to the floor to the chess board,” says Miss Carter Coates, a teacher in a combined second-third grade class at Gordon School.
Miss Coates says three of the 24 pupils came to school this year with knowledge of the game and taught most of the others. All of the boys and many of the girls like the game, she said.

This ongoing work is a tribute to the life and accomplishments of Robert “Bobby” Fischer who passionately loved and studied chess history. May his life continue to inspire many other future generations of chess enthusiasts and kibitzers, alike.
