The Philadelphia Inquirer Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Sunday, March 20, 1938 - Page 58 — Experts To Play Chess Ex-Champion — Union League Group To Compete Against Capablanca — Chess experts of the Union League, 25 strong, will pit their wits and skill simultaneously against Jose R. Capablanca, one of the world's great chess masters, tomorrow night at the club's quarters, Broad and Samson sts.
While at first glance it might seem the League members are “ganging up” on Capablanca it should be pointed out that in Cleveland in 1922 he played 103 games simultaneously, winning 102 and one being drawn, for a world's record.
Capablanca also has the edge on his Union League opponents in that he had an early start in the intricacies of the ancient game, having been taught by his father at the age of four. At 12 he defeated Juan Corzo to become champion of Cuba.
WAS CHAMPION
He became world's champion in 192 by defeating Dr. Emanuel Lasker at Havana. He held the championship until 1927 when he lost it to Alexander Alekhine at Buenos Aires.
