(Paul Morphy Falsely Accused of Sympathizing with the Confederacy)
Paul Morphy, the famous chess player, who sympathized with the rebellion at its earlier stages like many other Southerners, has seen the error of his ways, and is now a good Union man. He is practicing law in New Orleans.

As time passes, they'll add new editions to the newspaper archive, slowly, missing bits and pieces of the story will unfold. Like this new passage that turned up when I searched today. Notice how news papers don't waste time straining over the question whether or not Paul Morphy approved or dissented on the issue of "Slavery". No? Because the racist north couldn't care less about that issue. . . it was whether Paul Morphy supported Secession. THAT was the question of the hour! Abraham Lincoln confirms to Horace Greeley, his entire motive for War: "...My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery..." (Yankee cowards have done an awful lot of lying to cover up their past sins, but here's the letter): Lincoln confessed, "...If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it..." that is because Lincoln, was no Abolitionist!
Paul Morphy, it was reported, numerous times during and after the war, held no sympathies with the Secession . . . nevertheless he was accused of it by Yankees spreading idle, vindictive rumors dripping with venom as early as 1861... and THAT was enough to spell the doom of Paul Morphy. Morphy retired from celebrity in New Orleans, never to live down the Yankee harrassment and threats.
THAT (question of loyalty to the Union) was Paul Morphy's "crime" and although he was innocent of the non-crime, bitter, unforgiving, ruthlessly hypocritical Yankees know no forgiveness and till this day, hold their grudge against Morphy, gleefully printing and reprinting their smears of "insanity".
Morphy was a gentle man of culture, dignity, discipline and refused to give Yankee riff raff the reaction they were seeking to their unlawful defamation of the world champion. Shamelessly they went on with their decade long smear campaign, singling Paul Morphy out for hurtful, defamatory accusations he was "insane" and mocking how "death" was the only cure, in PUBLIC newspapers. This is the nasty truth about the racist Yankee North and how it treated Southern citizens in the socalled "union" and black lives in Union territory, were treated no better!
