AThe Standard Union Brooklyn, New York Tuesday, October 23, 1923 - Page 10 — The Chess Championship. — Frank Marshall, United States chess champion for the past nineteen years, encouraged by his victory over the Chicago Lasker and in the recent tournament at Lake Hopatcong, has challenged Jose Capablanca, chess champion of the world, to a set match. Capablanca replied that any match he plays would involve the world's championship. He is willing to play Marshall but only under well known championship conditions.
The main condition of a world's championship match were agreed upon by Capablanca and Europe's foremost players at the London tournament one year ago. A number of players, Rubinstein, Alekhine and others, had challenged Capablanca's title, which he won at Havana two years ago from Dr. Emanuel Lasker. Then it was agreed that the championship match should be for a purse of no less than $10,000 plus expenses for the two contestants.
But there is doubt that any such sum as $10,000 could be raised in the United States for a Marshall-Capablanca match. Chess is a game where gate money cannot yield any considerable return, hence clubs would have to be relied upon. With a match limited to, say, twenty games, ten clubs would have to put up on an average at least $1,000 each to see two games. Which is hardly an inducement.
